KYIV

Capital of Ukraine and the holy centre of Slavs, the most important cultural, scientific, industrial city of the country. The population is 2,654 thou. The telephone code is 044. City`s gates are two airports, international one - Boryspil located 20 km from the city and Zhuliany intended to serve domestic flights; railway and river terminals. This is one of the most charming and oldest cities of Europe known as "the Mother of Rus` cities". Every historical epoch left its mark here, but neither numerous foreign invaders nor economic declines were able to wipe it off the face of the earth. Glorious pages of the past and realities of the modern life have merged together creating the inimitable image of this city on the Dnieper banks. Among its places of interest there are a lot of remarkable monuments attracting constant attention of tourists: the Holy Sophia Cathedral, one of the first Christian temples in East Slav lands built in the 11th c. and famous for its frescoes and mosaics; Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery (Lavra), one of the most sacred places for Orthodox pilgrims from the whole Orthodox world, with its unique samples of religious architecture and saint caves; beautiful ensembles of St. Cyril`s and St. Anrew`s Churches, St. Volodymyr`s Cathedral and Vydubychi Monastery; Podil, a many-century commerce centre of Kyiv and Ukraine with typical merchant buildings and picturesque Andriyivsky Slope named by Kyivites and guests "Kyiv Monmartre". Numerous city`s museums welcome tourists to visit them and make acquaintance with Ukraine`s history (the Historical Museum), traditions of Ukrainian painting (Picture Gallery), glorious and tragic fight of our people during WW II (the Museum of Great Patriotic War 1941-1945; Babiy Yar) or mode of Ukrainian common people life (the National Architecture Museum in Pavlovo). Kyiv proposes a wide range of opportunities not only for cultural enrichment but also for relaxing and entertainment/ The famous Taras Shevchenko National Opera Theatre presents performances of the world`s standard. On the other hand, there is a wide range of night clubs, casinos and discos where boredom has been forgotten for ever.
